I resolve to try and wrap my head around the idea that one has to wait for a new year to roll around to make life altering decisions and actually stick by them, as opposed to just waking up one day and realizing you aren't where you want to be and then making a conscious effort to correct the situation.

Also, to not be quite as much of a cynical asshole. (To be clear, people still use these as an excuse to say any old thing that in theory makes them look like a better person, without any actual intention of following through, right?)

I suppose on a serious note, to all those who made legitimate resolutions and are actually following through with some measure of success, congratulations. I would lie and say I hope everything works out for the best, but it's pointless because things will only work out as well as you cause them to, regardless of what I or anyone else hopes.

The thing is, it gives people a boost. There's that moment when you realize that the calender has magically dictated that you make a change. I agree it would be better if we all just made those changes as soon as they needed to be, but some people need to have a reminder.
