How do you define the word, "Gamer"?

I for one, do not consider myself a gamer.
I just think of myself as a guy who likes to play videogames.
    "Gamer", to me, implies competition.

Let's hear how you define the word, and if you consider yourself to be a gamer.

I think it's a term you can use do describe yourself in part. Like, "Hello my name is Jim-Bob. I am a Vegan, a Belgian cinema enthusiast, a gamer and an amatuer torture porn actor." To describe yourself wholly as a gamer would probably be best reserved for those involved on a professional competition level though. I don't know. People get hung up on labels.

    "Gamers" don't exist anymore.

That's my thought behind it. The term "Gamer" doesn't matter, it's too broad nowadays.

The word "gamer" brings all sorts of gross imagery up in my head. I've never identified as such and always go out of my way to not throw the word around when talking about games here. I'm a player. Plain and simple. Been playin long before peeps started throwing the word around and I'll be playing long after the word gets retired.

"Gamer" does sometimes come out as a sort of negative word doesn't it?

I agree with the negative connotation that "Gamer" implies. You don't hear people who watch TV call themselves "televisioners" or whatever, right?

So many people play games at this point, as they do watch TV or use the Internet, that it seems arbitrary to define yourself as such. And as Tarvu said, playing games, to me, is only part of my collective whole. I also write, I like to hike, etc. etc. "Gamer" makes it seem that my whole life is based on videogames, and while a large part of it is, it's not big enough to go up to someone and say, "Hi, my name's Samurai, and I play games" like it's a profession or something.

Plus, if I did that, I'd sound dumb. Unless I gamed competitively, I suppose.

    "Videogame enthusiast" works for me.

There's all sorts of different gamers, so if someone wants to refine that title for themselves, that's fine I guess.

When my non-gaming associates want to think of me as their "gamer friend", I'm cool with being called a gamer.

Even then you would probably rather say "I'm playing video games on a competitive level and I participate in tournaments ... etc.", because, as it was said before already, the term gamer is too broad to be part of someone's description.

I could call myself a game, just to reflect on who I am, but I wouldn't say it in an introduction and I usually wouldn't say it to describe my character. A lot of people also differentiate: there are casual gamers, hardcore gamers, gamer girls ( god, how I hate this one ) etc.

If I had to choose I would call myself a "hardcore gamer", I guess. I spend a lot of time and money on it in general and I played CS on a relatively high competitive level successfully.

Video game hobbyist. There needs to be no other terms. If you aren't okay with that term you are a filthy casual! jk-not I'm not I'm horrible. Also Girl gamer is as stupid as Guy gamer. (not the user here)

I like when the term is used more loosely to mean "someone who plays games". Why does it have to be used so exclusively? Besides, additional words like "hardcore", "competitive", or "casual" can make the distinction for us. I've always considered myself a gamer.

I went a little crazy with the thread-making.

Hey, would you call yourself a "music listener?"

That's how I see it. The label is pointless, because everyone enjoys music.

After 200hours on Fire Emblem Awakening I had to give it away. IT DOES NOT OWN MY SOUL.
