I think you've hit the issue right on the head here. Certain words (I think "pretentious" is one of them - probably "hipocritical", "emo", "elitist" and "pseudo-intellectual" also belong on the list) are almost always used in a negative "I'm not really thinking I'm just hating on this" sort of context.

I wouldn't say that there is anything wrong with the word pretentiouus - but I almost always see it used in the sort of "not examining something with a clear mind" context you describe.

Ooh - we should add "you're a Nazi" to that list, too. Really almost anything that invokes Godwin's Law.

This is a much more eloquent version of what I was trying to say.

If there's an ounce of wrestling fan in you at all, grab Saturday Night Slam Masters. It's better than anything WWF/E or WCW released for the console (though WWF Raw ain't bad)

Haha, I just realized I haven't answered OP's original question. I liked Ultraman because well, it's Ultraman, and their censored version of Mortal Kombat for its goofy fake fatalities. My favorite was the one where Kano took your wallet instead of ripping your heart out.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but I would recommend Skyblazer to the OP. Its gameplay is similar to the older Ninja Gaiden titles (action/platforms/magic attacks) and the game has some cool bosses/levels.

Yes, yes and more yes. I also agree with Battletoads because it's just a game that you have to be able to say that, "shyeah I played that."

I played Chrono Trigger again and I'm pleased to say that it aged REALLY well. Also try Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Good stuff.

Oh and I liked Rock n' Roll Racing.

Yes, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is still my favorite Zelda game. So good.

Because it's clearly the best one.

If you like that, you should check out Shinobi on the PS2 (also the spiritual sequel Nightshade). Total bad-ass ninja combat. You can actually 1-hit kill most of the bosses, if you practice hard enough.

The games work because they pair near-impossible fighting challenges with instant-death jumping sequences. I know that 2 bad things generally make something bad... but in this case it really pushes you and makes something pretty amazing as a result.

If you can find a copy, Earthbound. That game is really really awesome. I never found a copy for a price I was willing to pay, but I've played it through on an emulator before. Great game. And Link to the Past!

I second Tales of Phantasia. A fantastic jrpg. Star Ocean is great as well. Made by a team that splintered off from making Tales of Phantasia actually so there are a lot of similarities style wise. Also try out a game called Metal Warriors. It's a really fun mech based shooter with a bad ass vs mode. If you can get someone to play with you I HIGHLY recommend it.

Though it's probably alright in its original form, a definitive version of that Star Ocean title is available for the PSP.
