Never owned an SNES before, what games should I play?

I was a SEGA guy; still am. But I downloaded an SNES emulator (because my friend wouldn't shut the fuck up about it), so what games should I play, guys? I've already downloaded Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger. What else?

    Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2

^^ That is a solid start. I'm not sure Yoshi's Island is up to the quality of the other games there, but it's certainly a fine game.

    I will add:

    Secret of Mana
(FF2 and FF3 - classic Final Fantasy games, if you haven't seen them elsewhere like the DS remakes)
Super Star Wars (!) - one of the sweetest games ever, in my opinion. A bit hardcore, but totally awesome. in Super Empire Strikes Back you learn force powers in a really hot way...
    Mega Man X
    Chrono Trigger
    Phantom 2040
    Demon's Crest
    Lost Vikings 1 & 2
    Act Raiser (NOT the sequel!)
Out of this World (Flashback: Quest for identity is also cool... not sure if it was released on the SNES...)
Aladdin (Oh yeah, seriously. This game is boss.)
    BattleToads
    Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage

People will tell you that Castlevania IV is good - but it is NOT. It was an early game for the system, it oversold... play a DS Castlevania or Symphony of the night instead.

    Besides the games mentioned:

*Uniracers - (Probably the most unique of all of the mentions so far.)
    Super Punch-Out!
    *Earthbound
The Lion King - (Same as what Doctor Strange said about Aladdin.)
    Super Mario RPG
*Pac - Man 2: The Adventure Continues (A Funny Point and "Click" game, and a real feel-good game.)
    Ninja Gaiden Trilogy

    * I recommend these the most. (For variety reasons. You don't want to overload on RPG's. Though I do recommend every RPG listed so far.)

Whatever you do, don't miss out on Link to the Past.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions, guys. Think I'm gonna have a lot of fun playing games that I missed because I was so loyal to SEGA.

I know the feeling. I missed out on a few N64 gems because I went with a Sega Saturn instead. I have absolutely no regrets though. Saturn had a ton of fucking amazing games.

Seconding/thirding Donkey Kong, Earthbound, Metroid, Mega Man, Lost Vikings, and Link to the Past.

I would say to only play the SNES F-Zero as a reference and dig into the GC sequel instead if you can.

Actually, I'm just now starting a new FF6 game, using a GBA rom. Damned if that title screen doesn't take me all the way back to '96.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Illusion of Gaia or Terranigma. Both are great adventure games.

Tales of Phantasia (I hear Star Ocean is pretty good aswell, but haven't played it)
    Bahamut Lagoon
    Front Mission Gun Hazard
    Front Mission 1
    Ogre Battles
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4
    Lufia 2
    Metal Marines
    Shadowrun
Fire Emblem (not sure if there's an English translation but the series is worth looking into generally)
    Tactics Ogre

    Would be my suggestions.

I've been looking at buying a SNES and catching up on a load of games I missed out on during my childhood (I was a Sega boy too). Gonna keep this list handy for when/if I get one.

Just get an emulator, it's quicker.

I mean err, yeah, buy that thang!

Earthworm Jim (can't remember if that came out on Megadrive too though)
    Micromachines (probably on both too)
    Street Fighter 2 Turbo

Think everything else has already been covered. Where did you get ur SNES emu from?

Question - do you have a gamepad to play with? Did you know that Xbox / PS3 controllers plug into your computer and work great? I'd hate for you to have a sub-optimal experience.

Switch Street Fighter 2 Turbo with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters if you feel like being a hipster. TMNT Turtles in Time is also a great beat 'em up too.

Also though I never had a Saturn or Genesis, my Game Gear still sees some action every once in awhile. If only I could find most of my games.

No one mentions Killer Instinct? FOOLISH MORTALS!
Also, if they are true SNES fans, they will still bitch at you because you don't physically own a SNES, or the games for it. It's seriously the best console ever made, so just fucking buy one, and get a true feel for the games the way they were meant to be played.
Super Nintendo controller, CRT television, and no emulation.

    My top three would be

    Super Metroid
Zelda - Link to the Past
    Super Mario World

Perhaps boring/safe choices, but certainly a few of the best titles released for the SNES.

Sure they're the standard titles recommended for SNES, but they happen to be the best along with Final Fantasy III (VI), Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger.
