You could get the assist characters you wanted with button combos in the arcade version too. I never been good at any of the Marvel games but I play 'em anyway. Used to fucking love this game on Dreamcast and arcades.

In the Dreamcast version you could unlock the characters permanently by doing certain things that I forget. In the arcade version you just had to know the code. Some of the hidden characters are pretty broken so who knows what they'll do.
