    yeah, I understand it just seems a little crazy. It only seems to happen with that one soldier. On the flipside I have a support guy who manages to get criticals almost every time he hits and he manages shots 40% and lower almost constantly.

    Slowly making my way though the game over Xmas and the Elite guys have started to show up.

    Really struggled for a couple of missions until the Plasma weapons were developed. I really love how the original's "keeping your head above water" aspect is still there.

    Has anyone gone through the DLC? Worth checking out?

    I haven't touched XCOM in a while, but I definitely will return at some point. Seeing it covered as Giant Bomb's game of the year stoked the fire.

    I'm waiting for a sale. Now that I've played the game and had a feel for each mission, the asking price just isn't worth it.

    Escort and Bomb Disposal are like 20 mins each, and a base assault hits 40+ if you don't rush in. So you're not getting a lot, and even though you get a leg up in Research, you can easily wait around for UFO's to attack and scavange before each major progression.

    Anyway, finished Normal...then jumped straight back in with Classic. Feels way better on higher difficulties, and I'm taking my time for R&D reasons. I felt like I rushed it on Normal, so I've been stunning enemies, farming equipment, etc and having a better squad for it.

    I haven't beaten it on Normal yet, but I've done the same problem. I rushed too fast and got too many un-necessary casualties early on and didn't have enough upgrades or research done.

    Now I've been being patient and doing more random missions and capturing as many enemies alive as I can. My main squad are almost all max level with top level gear and I have no research left to do.

    Can't wait to beat it and start over again on Classic with everything I know now.

    Yeah, I really struggled after the Alien Base Assault because that's when it starts introducing the next tier of enemies. So I was running around with a mix of basic equipment and lasers, and losing some good guys to the Mutons and Sectoid Commanders (I still miss you, Smokes).

    They up the attacks in Classic, which means you can farm more items, and as long as you don't activate a major mission (Base, Firestorm, Psi Ops, etc.), you're dealing with easier foes. You still have to keep the pace with satellites and panic levels, but there's plenty of room to breathe.

    Glad I played Normal, though. That was like one big tutorial. I don't think the game explains everything too well, not unless you've played the original. They give you big info dumps and some of the more important things pop up randomly in the loading screens. D'oh!

    How was I supposed to know that you couldn't stun a Cryssalid?! Oh, I paid dearly for that (then cheated by reloading).

    Yeah, I think I'll probably buy it just for the extra customisation options, but not at the price it's at. Might even wait till they've released the next DLC pack.

    I'd love a proper expansion, but I have no idea how they'd fit it into the game, unless it was set after the main story. I wasn't fussed about the abrupt ending, but I really expected something where XCOM thought about their next move or the council call in, "YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME! TAKE ALL OUR MONEY!"

    I wouldn't mind some one-off missions not related to the story, ones that put you in challenging situations. Kinda like the Special Ops thing from Modern Warfare, the training scenarios in StarCraft II, or the game situations in Madden (do they still do that? I haven't played Madden in over a decade).

    Maybe there could be an expansion playing as the alien side. It seems like a waste to have all those fully playable units only available in multiplayer, which some people might not even touch. A mini campaign where you take over a country, or the world, would be cool.

    I guess that would require a ton of assets, a new base, a new alien council or whatever, so it'll never happen.

    I dunno, I think I'd just like more content that builds on the random elements than anything specific - more customisation options for your soldiers, more maps to fight on, possibly a bit more effort put into making the maps feel like they're set in certain areas of the world, so maps in different parts of Europe, or Asia, or wherever don't all look the same. I'd love for the game to have more weapons and more aliens aswell, but apparently that might be too hard to implement.

    An alien compaign would be awesome aswell, though like you say unlikely to happen because of how much work it'd be.

    I picked this up on a whim during a cyber monday sale. I'm very into it though. I am only playing on Normal this first time around because I am new to the whole turn based strategy angle. There are so many factors to consider. Right now I"m trying very hard to get as many of these aliens alive for testing, that is being tricky.

    Has anyone played the DLC? Is it worth to get?

    Capturing aliens is a bit of a nightmare, but its worth it for the research benefits. Luckily, you don't have to capture robots and Cryssalids, and one of the autopsies gives you access to an Improved Arc Thrower.

    It hit me last night that, action-wise, it feels more like Front Mission than old XCOM; which I don't mind because I loved Front Mission. Too bad the purists don't see it that way...but hey, fuck 'em, this game is awesome.

    I'm also a dope and didn't realize the use of the Gray Market until like two nights ago. I was all like "guhhhh I have no more money" and then saw I could sell things that wouldn't impact research and suddenly I had sooo much money..... "Good story Conor"..

    I think the best piece of advice I can offer is to be patient at all times. I screwed myself over plenty of times when I first started playing the game by trying to rush into everything. It paid to be methodical, move slowly across the map as a group, and gang up on enemies whenever they appeared.

    This is especially true when you're trying to scout a map to see where the enemies might be at the start of a mission. Rather than dash forward 10 squares in one move, maybe move 5 and 5 over two turns. This way, you don't trigger 4 squads of enemies that you have to fight all at once. And if you keep your line of sight limited (as opposed to spreading your guys out across the whole map), you won't have to fight as many enemies at one time.

    Also, try to avoid moving into "fog of war" territory with your last soldier of the turn. It sucks to uncover a squad of dudes and not be able to get the first shots in, having to wait until next turn. I mostly avoided this by moving all of my guys into position first, then having them attack after everyone has moved.

    It's damn useful, but don't go overboard with selling corpses. Other countries usually ask for 6-8 bodies for extra cash, so if you're in a jam, just skim 5 (or more if you have the excess) of each and keep the body count at around 10 corpses per species.

    Sectoids stop appearing after you meet the Commander and the Mutons show up, and you really need their bodies for Interceptor upgrades. You'll find yourself burning through them later on. Cryssalids just give you melee armour bonuses, and since it's a game where you keep your distance, feel free to sell them off instead of making shell plating. It's really worthless once you start getting better armor.

    Don't sell Fragments, Alloys, or Elerium. A good chunk of manufacturing relies on these three components, but if something says "no research benefit", it's the greenlight to sell it all off at a nice price.

    Thanks for the tip! Is it worth it to try to keep bringing in live subjects? I did it once because it was a priority but now I've sort of forgotten it.

    No problem. My first run was full of trial and error, so I was amazed I scraped by on my income and the grey market.

    I didn't realise how important satellites really were when it came to monthly funding. You need to pump those things out (two a month is fine) and get a Satellite Nexus up and running because the countries won't send extra money/staff your way otherwise.

    As for bodies, you only need to capture one of each. Capturing just means you can unlock the Foundry and Research achievements, and it also speeds up Research time, but I got by without 100% completion. You can keep capturing aliens so you can stockpile their weapons, but you can't use all that stuff until you've researched anyway.

    I found capturing Mutons and the bodyguard variant a cost-effective way of getting expensive plasma weaponry pretty easily, though obviously it can be risky. If you don't want their weapons though you shouldn't bother capturing them (unless for research), because for some reason you can't sell them on the grey market alive or dead on the grey market, or atleast I couldn't. Which seems odd, would have thought a live alien to study would have fetched a decent price.
