    Chrono Trigger

I don't hate the game, but I really don't understand all the love for it. It's okay, the story is kinda cool but I think a lot of the love for this game is through nostalgia.

Also it doesn't help that I hate Akira Toriyama's art style.

Shadow of the Colossus. I cannot stand this game.

Also all the 3d Mario games. I can't finish any of them as I them too much of a chore to finish. I'm not sure about Mario 3d Land as I haven't bought a 3ds.

God of war is weird for me. when I'm playing it I'm not having fun, and not really enjoying it. though when I finish the game I'm glad I did and look back on it positively... idk where that one falls.

Heh. That pretty much describes my game experience with EVERYTHING over the past 10 years. So I've just shifted my emotional meter down to match.

yeah Idk, It kind of says something about a game if you can hate it and thoroughly enjoy it at the same time.

Bioshock - I gave it a good go but couldn't get into it. I felt like I was playing it 'cause I had to, not 'cause I wanted to.

Can’t anyone else stand the older Splinter Cell games? I tried to play most of them but they just bore or frustrate me. I really don’t get it, because I usually like stealth games and I’m fine Tom Clancy stuff, but Sam Fisher just makes me want fall asleep.

Probably most of the current trends. Not that I exactly hate them. It would be closer to the truth to say I'm just not interested at all. Like retro gaming for instance. I have literally been there and done that. I don't want to play SNES any more. I have a better console now.

Dead Space and Dead Space 2. Awful, awful games. Their stories are terrible, the game play is meh, and they're really not very scary at all. Complete crap

I'm with you on retro gaming, especially when it comes to console era. If it's Commodore, Amiga or prior, then I still get a little nostalgic but those memories are for the past and to look fondly upon in their place.

As someone who played this game on the SNES when it was new, my enjoyment of it came from (a.) the good balance between its gameplay and storyline. Never do I remember this game descending into JRPG grinding hell or leaving the player stuck without an idea of what to do, (b.) the swashbuckling and light-hearted spirit of the game. For a game about preventing apocalypse, it's got a bright and optimistic feel...far more positive reinforcement than something like FFVII's cold, sea-green dystopianism, and (c.) the music.

The art style and characters never did that much for me either, especially on the heels of Final Fantasy VI, which was basically the high water mark at that time.

    i totally agree with that.
The Splinter Cell games always tasted slightly stale in comparison to MGS...like plastic.

For older games I just assume it's reverence is tied to nostalgia. I have nothing against the game I actually enjoy it, but I see it in "Greatest of all time" lists an awful lot, and I'm trying to figure out why.

Any 'all time' lists are kinda useless bullshit because it's impossible to expect recent-gen gamers to experience retro games the same way that older gamers experienced them when they were new and cutting-edge. No gamer under the age of 20 can possibly look upon Chrono Trigger without simply knowing that it's not as heavily developed as, say, Final Fantasy XIII-2 or a new Kingdom Hearts game. The same goes for the inverse. Despite what 30-something game reviewers would have us believe about their 'objective' vantage points on the gaming world, they can't accurately experience a new Wii Mario game the same way that a 6-year-old fledgling gamer does.

To counter that statement . . . Super Metroid is revered as one of the all-time greats as well.

The first time I played Super Metroid was when it came out on Wii Virtual Console, almost a decade after I first played Prime 1. So I had no nostalgic ties to the game whatsoever. Despite that though, I thought the game was fantastic. It's not as developed as the more recent games are, but it's still an excellent game in spite of that and I think it has aged remarkably well.

Super Metroid deserves all the praise it gets. Chrono Trigger, not as much (at least I don't think so).

Everyone's got their preferences. For me, both games stand the test of time, especially if we're talking about the games' soundtracks.

I would argue that Super Metroid's formula has been better-maintained over the years following its initial release, with sequels in its own franchise and all of those Castlevania games that drew off its gameplay style. As such, it might have more timelessness on its side, whereas Chrono Trigger's gameplay is arguably oversimplistic compared to JRPGs from the past three console generations.

I still think 'all-time' lists are more appropriate for intellectually-devoid venues like Spike TV or G4, where they can get a much of B-list celebrities to chime in about why the original Super Mario Bros. is better than, say, Skyrim.

All the elder scrolls, most final fantasy games after 6, the New Super Mario games, any Resident Evil after 3(Revelations gets a pass.)

    I'm sure there's more.
