As someone who played this game on the SNES when it was new, my enjoyment of it came from (a.) the good balance between its gameplay and storyline. Never do I remember this game descending into JRPG grinding hell or leaving the player stuck without an idea of what to do, (b.) the swashbuckling and light-hearted spirit of the game. For a game about preventing apocalypse, it's got a bright and optimistic feel...far more positive reinforcement than something like FFVII's cold, sea-green dystopianism, and (c.) the music.
The art style and characters never did that much for me either, especially on the heels of Final Fantasy VI, which was basically the high water mark at that time.
