But what is it? I would be happy to look at it through glass but I don't like handling reptiles/amphibians/children I guess.

I like the 'driver' going straight over at the start though it looks like a Max Headroom dummy.

It's some sort of amphibian (salamander? I don't remember...) that can freeze for years at a time and still be alive when it thaws out!
