Since I don't think that many if any will be reading my c-blog for this, I thought it might fair better here as I think it needed to be done.
Entropia Universe: The MMO that should have never bin.
Now I know it is a little late in the game to do a review of an MMO that is in it self over 5 years old but I think this needs to be done with it’s updates that happened in the middle of last year to “upgrade” what the game and its makers could do with / in it.
If you have never heard of Entropia Universe, here is a little back info. The game it self is “free”, but my god are those quotes makers huge, but I will get in to that a little later. Here is where the game stands out, in the fact that you can, and are encouraged to deposit large sums of cash in to the game that turns in to game credits or “PEDs”. Now you might ask “What is so different about that, most free to play MMO’s use this system.” and this is the point that you would have thought wrong. The game acts like a virtual bank where you can later on cash your “PEDs” back for real world money as long as it is in sets of 1000 PEDs, which equals out to about $100.00 USD. Now that might sound great right now, until you find out how you make PEDs in this game.
With in 5 a couple of minutes you will find that there is no in game tutorial of how to even move your character. People with out standard MMO knowledge will see that, but then already know how to find out how to move via the options about what not. At this point I must say that this is just poor game design at best. You are dumped in to an empty world with no clear way to see what you are supposed to be doing, but a little message that says you have been granted an item that is used to “sweat” animal on the planet. So with my MMO sense still tingling I hit the “I” key to open my back pack to standard Diablo 2 style grid with a tool that looks like a zapper that very clearly stats in its info can do no damage to anything and only works on animal. Why is it important to know that it only works on animals? Because when you get to the starting zone, there are no animals in the area, and I looked for at least 3 hours before giving up and walking to the area that I started and trying to ask around. I have played over 20 MMOs, most of them free, and this is one off the most unintuitive MMOs I have ever played, If not all the games I have played. This game require you to look up info from a 3rd party site, and that is just ridicules and insulting to the players when that is the first thing that should have been developed.
Once finding my way, “talking to another player, and having him show me that I needed to go to a teleporter that was not labeled to a different zone that was somewhat a city and then was told to fallow the turrets till I see some animals. Now this is where I don’t know how people keep playing this game. With you sweater gun thing equipped, you go to one of these animals and click the “Use Tool” option and hear an annoying noise letting you know that something did not work, with no status message. I try doing this for another 5 times till my gun thing goes green and makes a green glow hit the animal. At this point I said finally something right I am going to get some item to sell or make in to something useful and move on with this game. How wrong I was, the animal comes up and hits me for 14 damage stopping the channeling that is required to gain the “sweat”. So not only does it stop you from getting the item if your hit, but it agros the Animal when you try to get the sweat. Now at this point I thought “Well I need to kill it or something to get it off me.” This is where I almost snapped, as you have no way to defend yourself AT ALL at the beginning.
At this point I thought ok I need to find a gun or why one at the store. Well a gun will run you about 4.6 PEDs and you start off with nothing. In the local chat I see that some one is buying sweat for 2.6 PEDs for 1000 sweats. Now let me let that sink in a bit. I have been playing the game now for 4 hours, and unable to get 1 sweat, but It makes me think that “Well they must be looted in groups of 20 or something at a time”.
Finally getting the gull to go back and try again, I end up using the tool on an animal that is attacking someone else doing the same think where it fails multiple times before getting the action to link up. Then the animal moves one step to the side and I get the message “Connection failed“. At this point I hit my chair in anger saying to myself, “So on top of all this I got to stay aimed at this thing with these shit controls, You got to be fucking kidding me.” I franticly open the option menu looking though all the controls for at least 30 minutes.
While looking through some very very hidden menus I find a curser toggle and wondered why it is not working when I am pushing it. Starting to just give up on this I just stair at the screen just looking around and playing with my mouse wheel and then I see it, You can go in to First Person mod. Now I am going to say at this point no one told me about this and nothing was even hinted at it in any screen shots or FAQs. At this point I almost put my arm through the monitor. And so I hit the crosshair toggle once again and what do you know I finally have a crosshair to know where I am pointing, that only works in FPS mod.
So now this is hour 6 and I have not done anything worth while but almost giving up on this game early. So I go running back to the animals, try to use the sweat extractor far from the animal so I can maybe, aim and channel with enough time to get the items I needed. Felling triumphant that I loot the item after all this time I go running from the animal back to the city with this huge inventory window surrounded by bones not really looking at it yet till I was safe in the city. But the feeling of triumphant victory quickly turned back in to wallowing despair as I only got 1 sweat for all my work. I went to go see how much I can vendor it for, it came to a whapping 0.00. Yep that’s right, the only means to get started in this game vendors for nothing and is only bought at a price of 2.6 PEDs per 1000, with a gun being 4.6 PEDs. At this point I exit the game and delete it off my hard drive.
Now I would like to point out that I looked up even more info to see there is something I am missing and I found this on the Wiki:
“The Entropia Universe entered the Guinness World Records Book in both 2004 and 2008 for the most expensive virtual world objects ever sold.”
And as stated before on destructoid.com someone just spent $330,000 USD to buy a virtual space in this game.
Just thinking about this makes my brain hurt, but hearing people making money from this game makes my nose bleed.
I would love to say this game is not for every MMO play just the top of the hardcore, but it is not even for them or for anyone out side of sadomasochists. The controls are buggy, the game world is really empty, you can walk through allot of objects, and you really cant even try the game before saying to your self “Ok this might be worth some of my cash.”
The idea of this game was great, the execution was horrible. Do not waste your time with this game, do not promote it, you would be better served paying and playing for a game like EVE online if you want to try to make some real world cash via a game.
Bland and laggy, I could not for the life of me find out why it was so laggy when I can run Left for Dead 2 on mid to high setting online as well as World of Warcraft with no lag on High settings.
While the music is kinda nice, the other effect sounds just kill it. I would rather listen to 8 bit NES sounds then this.
Not only massive clipping issue for an MMO, the graphics are granny and bland.
No help with learning the control, and minimal customizing with heavy limitations on editing the controls, it forces you in to a horrible control scheme that is not only wonky but as fluid as peanut butter.
There is none really, you’re a colonist on a planet. Story finished.
Unintuitive and embarrassingly bad.
There is a niche group around the world playing this for some odd reason but I can’t see people with out millions of dollars to blow spending anything or time on this. There are more things out there worth your money and time.
Do not even waist your time looking up this game. As the time to download it and uninstall it are more valuable to you for going out and getting something better.
