Just got back from watching The Hobbit in 48fps, it was pretty spectacular. Film was good too.

Not even a fucking gimmick, it's just a technical specification.

The reason it is even discussed is because the film reviewer scene is packed full of terrible people that get hooked up on shit like this. The standard frame rate for films is/was/can be/bananas 24fps, which borders on the limit under which the human ocular jazz will not see a series of images as smooth progression, moving away from it makes sense since it was only ever so low to save on film costs.

I'm watching 50/50 finally. It's already doing something right because JGL doesn't have prosthetics to make him look less pretty.

There's a great bit where he gets high on some medical marijuana and is just walking though the hospital is a haze, laughing at the dumbest shit. The best part of that sequence is when he walks past a dead guy and bursts out laughing. Awesome.

It's a really realistic film to me because I'd be real sad if JGL had cancer or ever had a bad day ever.

I watched 'The Do-Deca-Pentathlon' yesterday. As I've said before, I'm a huge fan of the Duplass brothers, and this film is what they're known for so I really liked it. It's more in common with their earlier movies than the last two, like they were getting back to their roots, which is an odd thing to say since they really haven't ever strayed from their roots. This just feels smaller and has more of their indie-mumblecore-fidgety camera work. I like that stuff, so it felt comfortable to me. I still think their previous movie, 'Jeff Who Lives at Home', is their best work yet, but this is right there with the rest of their work. Well, above 'Cyrus' because even though it's not a bad movie I still feel 'Cyrus' to be the bottom of their output.

Aaaaanyways, 'The Do-Deca-Pentathlon' is a story about two estranged brothers competing in twenty-five events to see who is the "best" brother. They are estranged because their competitive natures never let them get over the originial "do-deca" ending in controversy over twenty years ago when they were in high school. It a simple little dramedy that covers a few different family issues, between siblings, parents and kids, and spouses. The ending elicited feelings in me, but that's easy to do since I'm a giant softie.


Speaking of the Duplass brothers, I don't think I've talked about 'Safety Not Guaranteed' since I watched it. They were producers on it and Mark Duplass is one of the leads. Great movie. Quirky in a good way. While on the surface it's about a guy who may or may not be crazy who may or may not be building a time machine, it's really about relationships and maturing. I loved it.

So after seeing the Hobbit I can suspend disbelief enough to accept elves, dragons, trolls, and magic... yet it still bugs me that there's a character that has half his head covered in birdshit for his entire time on screen, yet nobody brings this up to him.
