Ah ok. Yeah, The Mist is alright, I guess. I'm just being extra rough on it because it's Sunday, I'm bored, and it's fun to shit on things over the internet. :P

The one you and Glooby are on about. The Mist. I've heard of Cloud Atlas and will definitely watch it sometime.

I'd recommend it. It isn't great, but it's Frank Darabont, so it's at the very least competently made. As far as Stephen King horror movies, you could do a lot worse. Plus, the ending is amazing. I'd give it a solid 8 or 7.5 out of 10.

I thought it was a solid flick until the ending. That ending killed the movie for me.

"Downer" endings can work, but that one was just stupid. "We ran out of gas, may as well kill ourselves." After fighting that hard to live they're just going to end it all without even attempting to get fuel somewhere? Without attempting to steal somebody's car? Really? It was dumb to me.

I respect stories that don't pull punchs and will go for the most fucked up, depressing, mean-spirited ending possible. Most of the people I know in RL hate downer endings, so whenever I see a movie/book/game/whatever that mans up and goes for the gut punch, I gotta respect that. However, I can see why people didn't like it in this case. Although, I did hear that Stephen King actually liked it more than his own ending, so it's up in the air I guess.

The thing I liked was how some of the monsters had human teeth. That one little detail made them about a hundred times more disturbing. I also want a gif of Giant Cthulhu because that thing was awesome. The way he appeared wasn't as entertaining as the chomp scene in Cloverfield, but the overall design was light years better (imo). Maybe even the best I've seen.

What kept me from taking the ending seriously was

the timing. The chain of events made sense, it just seemed rushed somehow, like the characters needed to be in a certain place before they ran out of movie. I think it would have had more impact if they had led up to it differently and made a longer film. As it was the last few coincidences seemed way too forced.

And just to be fair, watching it on TV diminished some of the impact as well. It's not the film's fault but ads destroy the pacing you need to appreciate something like this, even if it's been written perfectly. If I had seen it on DVD or in a theater I'd have surely been more impressed.

Oh yeah, and just remembered my question about Giant Cthulhu. Wtf would that thing even eat? Whales maybe? It's not as scary once you realize it probably died of starvation twenty minutes after you saw it. Still looked awesome though.

I like Cloud Atlas as a novel, but I've read too many bad-to-tepid things about the movie, and that trailer did nothing for me.

As for The Mist's ending, it works for the movie, a nice stinger to cap things off, but I prefer the "into the unknown" ending of the short. Doesn't really matter which one is better since:

Everyone thought OMG because they assumed that the soldiers appearing meant that everyone was safe or being rescued. But those things were still out there right and hadn't been sucked back into the portal?

I didn't much like the movie ending, felt like something of a cop out compared to the rest of the movie. A really good adaptation though, pretty much captures how I imagined things would go.

Yeah, the original Taken is crazily overrated. It's serviceable, but I don't get all the love it garnered.
