What would be the best Deadpool comic to pick up?
I've never really read anything involving him.

It not a dumb question! lol
well for deadpool the new series by daniel way is fantastic. i havent read much of the joe kelly run or the cable and deadpool run so i cant really comment on those.
On a Venom story, check out Spiderman New Ways to Die. It features the new Venom battling the old Venom who has now become Anti Venom.
okay just to clear this up
SPOILER ALERT!
*Takes place in early 500 hundreds of current volume I believe
Eddie Brock discovered his cancer(which he had before merging with symbiote) was getting worse and was degenerating rapidly. He auctioned off the symbiote and gave money to charity. Symbiote rejected the new host and went off to search for a more suitable one. Eventually it finds Mac Gargan(Scorpion) and bonds with him to become Venom version 2. So the new Venom is now Gargan.
In the New Ways To Die Arc
Brock got a psuedo symbiote back from a this guy Mr. Negative(dont really understand his powers) and is now Anti-venom. So Brock is back to his shenanigans but now more of a good guy.
END SPOILER
Now for recommendations, hmm....
If you want all out symbiote battle I would suggest Venom Vs Carnage. It's drawn by Clayton Crain who is one of my favorite comic book artist right now. Images really have a wetness too them so Venom looks stunning. Also contains the birth of Toxin, Carnage's offspring.
Dark origins was kinda alright. Shows what brock was like growing up, But art looks kinda wierd until he gets the symbiote.(He has grown up hands as a kid, swierd)
And for Deadpool I would highly recommend the Cable and Deadpool series. I've only gotten through the first half but enjoyed it extremely. Deadpools wackiness really works better if you join him with a serious character.

On a spiderman related note i'm super enjoying the revamped ultimate spiderman.
i picked up the first issue on a whim and now i may have to pick it up perminately.
I wanted to start reading deadpool but dont know where to start should I read the old books first or just start straight with the new series?

There was a 3 issue arc starting with number 10 that I just read that totally fucking HILARIOUS! I was picking up some back issues cuz I had been away from comics for about 5-6 months, and 10 was the start of a new arc focusing on a battle between Deadpool and the "dark" Hawkeye (its actually Bullseye working for the Dark Avengers, I guess). So I would strongly recommend that you start there. Trust me, you'll thank me once you've read it.

I don't really own anything much, other than a copy of Watchmen. I'm starting to get into Batman and Spiderman, but I have no idea where I'll be starting for Spiderman. And I really don't know anything about comics much more obscure than that.
Well, I saw a copy of Sandman: Dream Hunters at the local Borders, pretty much the only place that had it, but it look like some fat kid grabbed it and tried to eat it. All bent and shit. Artwork inside was stunning though.
The reason I never got into comics before is that there so confusing, each character has about a million series' and mini series' and unless you read all of it you feel like your not getting the whole picture, for example I have no idea why deadpool has about four voices in his head, he didn't have them in the few old series books I've read. Also things like the marvel multiverse confuse the fuck out of me. That's why before i've only read self contained things like the watchmen. In my opinion if Marvel and D.C want more readers they should simplify it, have one series per character and not count on the reader knowing the whole back story of every other character.

I suggest reading the marvel ultimate universe then.
however i know what you mean the thing i've learned is that all the back story doesnt matter, you dont need to know about the 500 issues that came before it.
superman is the last son of krypton how comes to earth and is raised by the kents before moving to metropolis and becoming a journalist.
shit like that just doesnt change, so use that as a foundation and your sure to find the rest as you go along.
what i tend to do is jump on when i new writer starts. or there is a revamp of the series.
It's not just the backstory, before I asked on here I started to read the old deadpool, within the first few issues it had mentioned Sasquatch, Typhoid Mary, Siryn and Daredevil all of which have a history with Deadpool that the book makes you feel you should know. Also I know the Weapon X program is pretty important to the Marvel universe, but they could at least give more info then "Deadpool was in Weapon X zomg" for newbies like me.
Also you say that backstory like that doesn't change, but isn't the point of the ultimate series that tge backstory has changed.

well up until his series he'd only make a couple of guest appearances. so that joe kelly series really is the start. and over the years you do find out about deadpools participation in weapon x over the years he's been around.
thats kinda the problem with comics, the writers make up shit as they go along. the resent stuff about the next superman movie is proof of this.
if WB lose the writes to the siegel family they wouldnt be able to use certain aspects of his origins but be able to use other stuff.
just persuasive and keep reading :-s
Well the ultimate series isnt a changed universe its more of a simplification away from continuity.
