    D-Toid Community Game Recommendations Thread

*EDITED TO INCLUDE WRY GUY'S ORIGINAL POST*

Quote Originally Posted by Wry Guy View Post
There has been a serious glut of threads of a certain nature as of late. Many, many threads with individual people asking if they will like a certain game or if people would give them recommendations. I think it's time we just centralize this.

Please come here if you would like recommendations with any game, or if you would like advice on if a particular game might be suited to your tastes. I would however like to present some guidelines. Clearly I can't force anyone to do this, but it's in everyone's best interest to do so:

    1) State your interests in as much detail as possible. Perhaps note a few games you like, but try to rely mostly on stating the qualities you value most or are currently looking for in a game. If you already have some games you're interested in, say so.

    2) Make sure to note what games you ALREADY have. What would help immensely is if you got yourself a backloggery account to help people track your collection. ( http://backloggery.com/ )

    3) Do not ask people to describe a game in great detail, or to sell you on the title. Take what information you are initially provided with and begin doing your own research through websites like metacritic. ( http://www.metacritic.com )

    4) As a common courtesy, if there is more than one person actively asking for a recommendation at a time, do make sure to quote or address the person you are trying to toss recommendations toward. Common sense, I know.

So no more of these, "I'm a jaded RPG player who doesn't know if he can stand the long, harsh ordeal of playing a game that doesn't live up to my expectations. Please tell me if I should play this or not" threads.

So, I just finished a trade on Goozex and am able to get any game. Problem is, I don't know what to get. I was thinking that you guys may be able to assist me in deciding what to get.

I like RPGs, SRPGs, some action games, and the occasional shooter. Also, I am not too interested in any mainstream games at the moment. I've played the final fantasy games, most nippon ichi games, the SMT series, Ico, SotC, and a lot of other Atlus titles. Can anyone give any suggestions?

    There's a PS2 version of Rez.

    Find it.
    Buy it.

I wish I was into that sort of game. But, alas, I am not.

You're going to have to be a little more specific on what you want, but here are some gems I genuinely liked:

Wild Arms 2 (though the first one is awesome, and the remake, Alter Code: F will probably be easier to find than either, and is still very awesome)

Gitaroo Man (Here is a video showing why it is awesome and why you should have it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8-4K5Q0Zc8)

    Mr. Mosquito (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ3Rs42Nw-Y)

Shenmue (Why there will probably never be a third installment in the series is one of the biggest travesties in gaming history. However, the first one is easily the better of the two and probably pretty hard to find at this point. Gameplay Video 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4oGGH5lWkg and Gameplay Video 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JvYY...eature=related)

I know you didn't state having a Dreamcast, but I highly recommend this game.

I'm totally not into Shenmue. In fact, I've never once considered getting any of the game you listed. No offense to the games, they just don't appeal to me.

To be more specific, I like turn-based SRPG and RPGs, for the most part. Something similar to disgaea, but there aren't many of those kinds of games. Hmmm, I like mainly tactical games. Awesome looking attacks are certainly a bonus. Also, I hate depressing games. Action games have to be fast paced, and with a decent degree of variety. I like certain shooters, but they too have to be pretty fast paced.

If you need more specifics, just tell me.

Wild Arms 2 is definitely a turn-based RPG. It's definitely one of the best RPGs on the PS not many people know abouy. You said you weren't looking for mainstream, so I gave you a couple oddball titles.

If you have the resources to do so, I suggest you look into Namco X Capcom. That game sounds like something you may like. Also, if you haven't played any of the newer Prince of Persia's, I'd suggest the one for the 360. It's pretty, plays well, and has a good storyline, as well as elements of challenge that aren't ridiculously difficult (Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2, I'm looking at you). If you haven't played Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, it's an excellent game and is definitely worth the purchase. I bought it a week ago and have been playing it at a friend's house as much as possible (I don't own a Wii anymore).

I played Metroid Prime 3, I cannot get Namco X Capcom (I don't have a modded PS2), and I do not like easy games (I'm a freaking masochist when it comes to difficulty). I do appreciate your suggestions, don't get me wrong. I've seen Wild Arms in action, and it just doesn't seem that interesting. But, who knows, I may give it a shot at some point (later in the future).

You know, this is a really inefficient way of getting recommendations. Seriously. I think I've seen enough of these types of threads that I'm going to take some initiative and create a general "Recommend Me Something" thread. Set up some rules and guidelines to help the process too. In the mean time it seems you really are intent on getting a strategy title.

Get yourself a copy of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.

I would recommend Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom, but you said you've played most of the Nippon Ichi games, so you've probably already played them.

Have you played Radiata Stories yet? It's not a turn-based RPG, but it has more potential party members than Suikoden*. The storyline isn't the best I've seen, but you start to love the big-eyed suckers by the end of the storyline.

And it has a branching storyline half-way through, so you can play it 1.5 times.

*Speaking of Suikoden, play Suikoden 1/2/3, maybe 4. And Tactics wasn't that great, but you might enjoy it.

Since you have a DS, try the Fire Emblem remake. And if all else fails, Luminous Arc 1&2. I didn't like Luminous Arc, myself. Not a bad game, I just hold all SRPGs to the unfair standard of Final Fantasy Tactics.

I've played Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Radiata Stories, and not interested in the Fire Emblem remake (I've played enough Fire Emblem, thank you). I've looked into Suikoden a bit, but I don't think I want to use my purchase on it. I think SMT:N spoiled me, as I just used to eat up any JRPG I could find.

I think I can make this a bit easier. I have a few games I am looking into.

Aedis Eclipse ~Generation of Chaos~ (PSP)
    Eternal Poison (PS2)
    Dragoneer's Aria (PSP)
    Dual Hearts (PS2)
    Spectral Souls (PSP)
    Shining Force Exa (PS2)
    Popolacrois (PSP)
Star Ocean 1 or 2 (PSP)
    Valkyrie Profile Lenneth (PSP)

Any input on these titles would be appreciated.

Jesus, I want this game so bad. I hear mixed reviews, but it seems the good outweigh the bad.

I'm not interested in TWEWY. It doesn't seem too interesting to me.

I never tried GoC, because all the reviews complain of insane load times during battle before every attack animation, which you cannot turn off.

I heard Eternal Poison is amazing.

I'm unfamiliar with the next three games.

Avoid every Shining Force title after Shining Force 2.

Popolocrois is great. Get it if not Eternal Poison.

I've never played the Star Ocean games, so I can't comment.

Valkyrie Profile is one of those games that you'll either love or hate. But it's Goozex, so you can always trade it to someone else if you dislike it.

Those are my best suggestions at this point. You seem pretty particular about what you want, and since the suggestions of others don't seem to make much impact on your impressions of games, I suggest you just go with your own intuition above anyone else's.

    Responses in order of appearance.

I hear that they fixed it with this one.

Still on the fence for eternal poison.

I heard Exa was pretty good.

Popolocrois sounds a bit easy, but is an option.

I am undecided on the star ocean games. They were just a consideration.

Oh, and I'm not really that particular. It's just that I need to have the gameplay described to me in some amount of detail before I can decide on it. I haven't heard enough about the other games' mechanics to be interested.

You know, you're working with Goozex here. It's not like you need to have some fine tuned senses for fear of avoiding utter peril. Go with your gut instinct and just play something. Make sure it'll be something easy to get rid of if you don't like it and then try again if you get a bust.

Going with your gut is usually best. The game industry is set at a standard that very little on the market is completely unlikable unless you as a player are just highly inflexible. When you pick something that feels like it will appeal to you, the chances are you will enjoy that game regardless of anyone elses' opinion simply because there's already a hook that has your interest.

If you need to find out what a game is like, you can do your own research with metacritic. In fact, if you already have games you have your eyes set on you should be doing that already. That's what these types of threads are supposed to be for anyway is just pointing you in the direction of something other people enjoyed, and letting you figure it out from there. It's one thing to ask people what they think about a game, but it's lazy to expect people to explain them to you.

What I meant to say is that I'd like to hear why they thought it was a good battle system. I've mostly just heard it was either good or bad, with little description as to why.
