Axelay, Gradius III, Super R-Type, Thunder Spirits/Thunder Force III, and a majority of the best SNES shooters never made it out of Japan and are expensive as hell, such as Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie, Pop n'Twinbee, Parodius, Spriggan Powered, etc.

Contra is apeshit impossible. I have no idea how so many people can give that game a run for its money.

    Yeah. It's not very good.

    But it's called Raiden Trad.

Sunset Riders is the shit because it's the only game you get to play as a mexican dressed in a pink sombrero and poncho who wields dual shotguns.

That's my pick for best SNES shooter. It's an amazing Capcom game and so much better than the arcade version, plus a mean, mean soundtrack. I also used to like AeroBlasters but now I find it kinda sloppy. I think the Genesis was a better console for 16 bit shooters with Gaiares, Wings of Wor, etc.

    Sunset Riders!

    "You a big fool." - Chief Big'um Wig'um

That game is my pick as best shooter for the SNES with Gradius III. Earth Defense Force was a good shooter, but it was surprisingly hard.
