As the man, I'll tell you that a part of our business is required to operate 24-7-365 which in turn requires us to hang on to a skeleton crew through all holidays. We do strive to spread the load out amongst the shift guys that handle that work though, unless there is someone who really just wants to work it. If there are ample resources in your department to split the work up and they haven't and aren't offering any comp, then you've definitely pissed in someone's pie.

I'm on a four man team that provides 24/7 coverage for the police. I work an 8 day rotating shift pattern of 4 on / 4 off 12hr days. Our shifts haven't been adjusted for Christmas and that's just how mine have landed.

I'll get paid double time for any of the Bank Holidays (25th and 1st) but other than that it's just "tough shit handsome, you're it". At least the fact that my job is an 'on demand' position means I'll probably be able to just sit around doing fuck all.
