The Official Destructoid Hip-Hop/Rap catalog thread
Hip-Hop is one of the most prolific genres in music. From its early beginnings in the late 70's to it's commercial boom of the 90's it has grown a huge following. However most of the pioneers of this music are misrepresented nowadays by pop charts, this thread is here to solve the problem once and for all. Let's dig deep in our record collection and bring to the Destructoid community an extensive list of all the albums that make our spines shiver, our heads knock on some of the most beautiful tracks of the birth-child of the Bronx.
Slow updates are slow, I'm quite busy these days sorry about that

I've came up with a simpler way to nominate artists in the Hall of Fame. Get your Lupe Fiasco out in the open and the more songs and albums are displayed the more chances you'll get him in the hall of fame.
Following battles will be too hard for me ; I think we've shown clearly that Mos Def was our first mandatory addition to the best cats ever.
I'm off to sleep now! F'ing insomnia!

I fuckin' love the Madvillainy album; it got me into Madlib's stuff and I've been on a spending spree ever since. Wish I shelled out on the special edition of Madvillainy that was released in 2008. The price was high, but now it's hard to fucking get a copy.
Am I allowed to throw in some Sage Francis, EL-P and Buck 65?

I don't know too much about older things, but Black Sheep - The Choice Is Yours is a classic. I really wish they didn't include the young guy yelling out, "UH, COME ON", but I'm a sucker when he starts the 3rd verse.

Also, this list needs more Kweli. I think that Reflection Eternal is a flawless album. Great beats provided by DJ Hitek, and Kweli is an amazing MC. I'm a Kweli fanboy (first rap album I've bought), but of all the tracks on Reflection, I'm going to stick with the last (sort of hidden) track.
(mislabeled as coming from Ear Drum, but it's from Reflection Eternal)

@Mxyzptlk : Write them down still! The more they get mentioned , the more chances you have to see them in the Hall of Fame! :D
@Ali D: You are allowed to put everything that we can consider Hip-Hop (Even Blondie's rap ANYTHING), the more the better! Oh and that Madvillainy I'm buying that shit on vinyl son!
@Changston : FUK YES FOR BLACK SHEEP!
Parfois la vie ressemble à une balle perdue

I had to put some MC Solaar !
I know it's moon speak to you guys , but IAM are the Wu-Tang of French Hip-Hop.

Shinryu
fuck yeah MF DOOM. and yeah Madvillainy is the shit.
Tripping off the beat kinda, dripping off the meat grinder, heat niner, pimping, stripping, soft street minor
personally I fucking love everything by Guru/Gangstarr and pretty much everything DJ Premier touches, Quest and most Wu-Tang, especially GZA. i'm also a big Nas fan with all that entails. Also I can't believe no one's even mentioned The Roots yet:
RAPPERS SEE ME HIDE THEY FACE LIKE OSTRICHES
Here's a few albums I consider *masterpieces* that haven't been marked yet:
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
Nas - Illmatic
Gang Starr - Step in the Arena
GZA - Liquid Swords
Do we wanna extend this to Euro hip hop and other sub-genres? I'm not too big into the UK scene, and they're not hip-hop music-wise, but I'd recommend anything by Roots Manuva and The Streets
TASKMASTER BURST THE BIONIC ZIT SPLITTER
Mike Skinner tends to be scoffed at in hardcore circles for his lax rhymes and apparent lack of conventional flows. Nothing like hip hop except for the fact that he's sorta rapping, but the man can write a song better than most of his peers:
also, no eminem love yet? say what you will about the man but he was the fucking shit back in the day.
Love MC Solaar as well.
03-08-2010, 06:36 AM
Kraid
The Roots are amazing! I can't believe I forgot them , well you were here to correct that!
Also I think I love you for The Streets , Don't Mug Yourself has to be one of my favorite tracks of all time ; That thing is hilarious. OI OI OI OI! I can take it believe it , believe!
Gangstarr is freaking gold in my book , Guru is one of my favorite MCs!
also , as for Eminem he's cool but seriously there's better! No hate it's just that I'm not a huge fan.

Eminem is technically one of the best MC's, but IMO he hasn't yet been able to translate those raw skills of his into a truly 10/10 album. I think his problem is he tends to get caught up in complex flows his style suffers a bit from it. That and his tendency to use shock tactics sort of pigeonholed him in a way. Bottom line he was at his best when he had stuff to bitch about whereas now that the money's rolled in he seems content with doing production work, mostly.
He dropped two albums that were almost stellar. Working with Dr. Dre all those years you'd think he'd have gotten a little better production; not that what he got was bad but it's still far from Dre's best work.
I think it's ironic that the track that is IMO his highest moment (Stan) is also the one where he lets go of those crazy rhymes and complex structures to focus on content. I've yet to hear anything like it.
since you love the streets (fuck yeah blinded by the lights, so many drunken saturday nights to that track)
Chips fly around to the sound of the latest chart entry, an incendiary waiting to blast
No harm with the contest who can throw the furthest
Behind the counter they look nervous, but
Carry on cutting the finest cuts of chicken from the big spinning stick <-- I can fucking taste it
and THANKS for this thread, we needed one badly

The Slim Shady LP was probably my favorite but he grows old really really fast even so.
